HSA/FSA Eligible Massage Chairs: How to Qualify With an LMN

An OSIM massage chair may qualify for HSA or FSA payment when it is recommended to treat or alleviate a specific medical condition and a licensed healthcare provider determines that it is medically necessary. Through OSIM’s partnership with Sika Health, eligible customers can complete a private online health assessment and request a Letter of Medical Necessity, or LMN, during checkout. If approved, customers may pay with an HSA/FSA card directly or use the LMN and purchase receipt to request reimbursement.

Frequently asked questions

Find answers about HSA/FSA eligibility, Letters of Medical Necessity, Sika Health’s provider-review process, payment options, reimbursement and required documentation.

What are HSA and FSA accounts?

A Health Savings Account is a tax-advantaged account available to eligible individuals enrolled in a qualifying high-deductible health plan. A healthcare Flexible Spending Account is generally an employer-sponsored arrangement that allows employees to set aside pre-tax funds for qualifying healthcare expenses.

Account balances, contribution rules, deadlines and claim procedures vary. Check your account portal or contact your employer, HSA trustee or benefits administrator for plan-specific information

What is a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN)?

A Letter of Medical Necessity is a document from a licensed healthcare provider explaining why a product or service is recommended to diagnose, treat, mitigate or alleviate a specific medical condition. For a product that is also commonly purchased for general wellness, an LMN may help establish that the customer is purchasing it primarily for a medical purpose. The HSA or FSA administrator may still review the expense and request supporting documentation.

Why do I need a Letter of Medical Necessity to purchase a Massage Chair with HSA and FSA account?

Massage chairs are commonly purchased for general wellness, which does not automatically make them qualified medical expenses. An LMN may be required to document that a particular customer is purchasing the chair primarily to treat or alleviate a specific medical condition. Through Sika Health, an independent licensed provider reviews the customer’s information and determines whether issuing an LMN is appropriate.

How do I get a Letter of Medical Necessity?

Choose Sika as your payment method to use your HSA/FSA at checkout for your massage chair  purchase. You’ll fill out a quick survey to tell Sika’s medical team about your qualifying symptom(s). Once you’re approved, Sika will email your receipt and next steps..

Here’s how:

  1. Fill out a quick survey to see if you prequalify for a Letter of Medical Necessity
  2. Complete the intake form to tell Sika’s medical team about your qualifying symptom(s), similar to how you would at a doctor’s office
  3. Our team of healthcare providers will evaluate your qualifying symptom(s) and determine your eligibility

Once you have your LMN in hand, you can return to the merchant’s site and shop as usual. During checkout, you’ll simply select the Sika payment method to utilize your HSA/FSA funds.

How long does it take to get approved for a Letter of Medical Necessity?

Our healthcare provider team strives to provide a response within 12 business hours after you submit your LMN intake forms.

How long is a Letter of Medical Necessity valid?

Approved LMN is valid for 12 months from the date it is signed. An LMN cannot be applied retroactively to purchases made before its signed date. Keep the signed LMN and itemized purchase receipt for your records.

Why wasn’t I approved for a Letter of Medical Necessity?

Sika’s independent healthcare provider may determine that the submitted information does not establish medical necessity for the product. If an LMN is not issued, you can still purchase the massage chair using another accepted payment method. Contact Sika Health if you have questions about the decision or application process. Do not submit another application unless Sika advises you to do so.

What are Common Conditions that may qualify for a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN)?

Massage chairs may be eligible for HSA/FSA use if prescribed by a healthcare provider for:

  • Back or neck pain
  • Musculoskeletal pain, tension, or soreness
  • Arthritis
  • Diabetes-related circulation issues
  • High blood pressure management
  • Chronic headaches or migraines
  • Injury recovery support
  • Poor circulation
  • Fatigue

What information will I need to provide for a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN)?

During Sika Health’s LMN process, you may be asked to provide your name, contact information, date of birth, details about your symptoms and medical history, phone verification and a photo ID.

The information you provide in the LMN process will be kept confidential and shared only with Sika's independent healthcare providers to evaluate your eligibility for an LMN. For more information, see the full privacy policy.

How do I submit my Letter of Medical Necessity to my HSA/FSA provider?

Your HSA or FSA administrator may require documentation to substantiate the purchase. Keep both the signed LMN and itemized receipt.

  1. Log into your HSA/FSA account on your benefit administrator’s website
  2. Find the Reimbursement or Claims section
  3. Upload your receipt and Letter of Medical Necessity

Your administrator will evaluate the purchase according to your plan’s rules. Contact the administrator directly if you are unsure whether the expense will be accepted. You can learn more about the process what is eligible at https://www.irs.gov/publications/p969.
If you are having trouble locating your itemized receipt or LMN, please contact Sika support at support@sikahealth.com

Can I check out with Sika if I’m purchasing an ineligible item along with an eligible item?

Yes! For mixed baskets, when you select the “Sika | Pay with HSA/FSA” payment method at checkout, your cart will automatically be split into eligible and ineligible subtotals. You can then add the appropriate payment method to each subtotal to complete the checkout process.

Can I still check out if my HSA/FSA balance is too low?

Yes! When supported by Sika’s checkout, the available HSA/FSA balance can be applied to the qualifying purchase amount, with the remaining balance paid using another accepted credit or debit card. Confirm the payment split displayed during checkout before submitting the order.

Can I Use HSA/FSA Funds for Installment Payments?

No — HSA and FSA debit cards only support one-time payments at the time of purchase. They cannot be set up for monthly instalment plans or recurring charges. To use your HSA or FSA funds, the eligible expense must be paid in a single payment transaction.
