What are HSA and FSA accounts?

Health savings accounts (HSA) and flexible spending accounts (FSA) are programs that allow you to set aside pre-tax dollars for eligible healthcare expenses. OSIM partners with Sika Health to make using your tax-free dollars seamless at checkout. If you aren't sure if you have an active account or available balance, check with your employer's HR department or your insurance provider.

What is a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN)?

A Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) is an official document from a licensed healthcare provider. It proves that a specific product or service is medically required to treat, diagnose, or alleviate a specific health condition, making the purchase legally eligible for HSA/FSA funds.

 

Think of it as a doctor's note for your massage chair. While general wellness purchases aren't covered by HSA/FSA, an LMN confirms that your purchase is actively treating a symptom, allowing you to use your pre-tax benefits.

Why do I need a Letter of Medical Necessity to purchase a Massage Chair with HSA and FSA account?

Massage chairs are considered "dual-eligible" products by the IRS. Because they can be used for both general relaxation and medical treatment, you need an LMN to prove you are using the chair for a specific medical condition in order to unlock your HSA/FSA funds.

 

Items like adhesive bandages are always eligible because they serve a strictly medical purpose. For dual-eligible items like massage chairs, the IRS requires confirmation that the treatment alleviates pain or chronic conditions. Through our partnership with Sika Health, you can apply for this required LMN directly during the checkout process.

How do I get a Letter of Medical Necessity?

Choose Sika as your payment method to use your HSA/FSA at checkout for your massage chair  purchase. You’ll fill out a quick survey to tell Sika’s medical team about your qualifying symptom(s). Once you’re approved, Sika will email your receipt and next steps..

 

Here’s how:

  1. Fill out a quick survey to see if you prequalify for a Letter of Medical Necessity
  2. Complete the intake form to tell Sika’s medical team about your qualifying symptom(s), similar to how you would at a doctor’s office
  3. Our team of healthcare providers will evaluate your qualifying symptom(s) and determine your eligibility


Once you have your LMN in hand, you can return to the merchant’s site and shop as usual. During checkout, you’ll simply select the Sika payment method to utilize your HSA/FSA funds.

How long does it take to get approved for a Letter of Medical Necessity?

Our healthcare provider team strives to provide a response within 12 business hours after you submit your LMN intake forms.

How long is a Letter of Medical Necessity valid?

Letters of Medical Necessity are valid for 12 months from the date they are signed and provided. Please note, LMNs cannot be used retroactively for purchases made prior to the date they are signed.

Why wasn’t I approved for a Letter of Medical Necessity?

Sika’s independent healthcare provider may determine that you do not have symptoms demonstrating a medical necessity for a product or service. While you cannot use your HSA/FSA funds now, you can still use another payment method to complete your purchase. We do not recommend reapplying.

What are Common Conditions that may qualify for a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN)?

Massage chairs may be eligible for HSA/FSA use if prescribed by a healthcare provider for:

  • Back or neck pain
  • Musculoskeletal pain, tension, or soreness
  • Arthritis
  • Diabetes-related circulation issues
  • High blood pressure management
  • Chronic headaches or migraines
  • Injury recovery support
  • Poor circulation
  • Fatigue

What information will I need to provide for a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN)?

To see if you’re a candidate for a Letter of Medical Necessity, similar to other telehealth experiences, you’ll be asked to share your name, contact information, date of birth, and information about the symptoms you are experiencing and your medical history. We will also verify your phone number and ask you to upload a photo ID to verify your identity.


The information you provide in the LMN process will be kept confidential and shared only with our independent healthcare provider(s) to evaluate your eligibility for an LMN. For more information, see the full privacy policy.

How do I submit my Letter of Medical Necessity to my HSA/FSA provider?

If you paid with your HSA/FSA or to get reimbursed if you paid with your credit/debit card, you will need to submit your Letter of Medical Necessity and the order receipt to substantiate the purchase. To do this:

  1. Log into your HSA/FSA account on your benefit administrator’s website
  2. Find the Reimbursement or Claims section
  3. Upload your receipt and Letter of Medical Necessity

Can I check out with Sika if I’m purchasing an ineligible item along with an eligible item?

Yes! For mixed baskets, when you select the “Sika | Pay with HSA/FSA” payment method at checkout, your cart will automatically be split into eligible and ineligible subtotals. You can then add the appropriate payment method to each subtotal to complete the checkout process.

I don’t have enough funds on my HSA/FSA card to cover my entire purchase. Can I still checkout with Sika?

Yes! If you do not have enough funds on your HSA/FSA card, Sika will charge the available balance and allow you to provide a backup credit or debit card to handle the rest of the purchase.

Can HSA/FSA funds pay in instalments?

No — HSA and FSA debit cards only support one-time payments at the time of purchase. They cannot be set up for monthly instalment plans or recurring charges. To use your HSA or FSA funds, the eligible expense must be paid in a single payment transaction.
